Where photo location data lives
Supported image formats may contain latitude, longitude, altitude, direction and location-related timestamps inside EXIF or XMP metadata. Whether those fields exist depends on the device, camera permissions and editing workflow.
Location fields you may encounter
- Latitude and longitude
- Coordinates that can point to a specific place.
- Altitude
- The approximate height at which the image was recorded.
- Direction
- The direction the camera was facing when supported by the device.
- GPS timestamp
- A time value recorded by the location system.
Why check before sharing?
A coordinate can identify a home, workplace, school or frequently visited location. This matters for family photos, marketplace listings, anonymous submissions and images shared with people you do not know.
When location metadata is useful
Location data is not always harmful. It can help organize a personal library, document field work or remember where a trip photo was taken. Keep the original if that information matters, then create a separate copy for public sharing.
How to create a copy without supported GPS metadata
- Select the original photo in ImageHush.

- Create a separate clean copy rather than replacing your original.
- Download the copy after the verification scan completes.
Turning off camera location is not retroactive
Changing the camera permission on your phone can stop new photos from receiving a location, but it does not automatically clean older files. Existing photos need to be checked separately. Copies stored in cloud libraries may also keep their own location records even after you clean a downloaded file.
Check the exact copy you will share
Editing, exporting and messaging apps may create new versions of a photo. Scan the final copy, not just the original. ImageHush checks supported GPS structures locally and checks the cleaner export again before download.
Metadata removal is not complete anonymity
Street signs, landmarks, reflections and other visible details may still disclose a location. Apps and cloud services can also retain separate records. ImageHush reports supported metadata in the selected file; it cannot audit every copy or external system.
