What can a Word document reveal?
Modern Word documents are ZIP packages containing text, relationships and XML property files. Those properties can include creator names, last editor, company, manager, dates, revision counts, application details and custom values added by an organization or template.
Supported DOCX cleanup
- Core properties
- Supported creator, last modified by, title, subject, keywords, dates and revision data.
- Application properties
- Supported company, manager, application and template-related fields.
- Custom properties
- The custom property part is removed when present.
- Thumbnails and attribution
- Supported package thumbnails and revision attribution are cleaned.
What does not disappear?
Visible text, tracked changes, comments, hidden text, linked resources and embedded files can still contain identifying or sensitive information. Metadata cleanup is not the same as document inspection or redaction.
Why macro files are not accepted
The current tool supports DOCX, not DOCM. If macros or package signatures are detected, cleaning is blocked because rewriting the package could alter behavior or invalidate security features.
Use a copy and review it
